Silent Circles for Palestine

Commemoration 2026

When: 15 May
Where: Muntplein, Brussels
Time: 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

In 1948, thousands of Palestinians were violently expelled from their homes, their streets, and their villages. The Nakba is not a closed chapter: even today, we hear almost daily horrific reports from Gaza and the West Bank.

That is why we gather together, in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Will you join us?

Commemoration of 78 Years of Nakba

Today, we pause to mark 78 years of the Nakba. This moment of silence strengthens our call for a just peace. The creation of the Zionist state of Israel on 14 May 1948 meant a catastrophe — in Arabic: nakba — for the Palestinian population. Israeli armies and armed groups expelled 750,000 Palestinians. More than 500 Palestinian villages and hamlets were wiped off the map.

The displaced inhabitants ended up in refugee camps, including in Gaza, and Israeli legislation made it impossible for them to return to their homes or land. Often, the house key is the only thing that still connects them to their past.

The Ongoing Nakba

The Nakba is still happening today: the Ongoing Nakba. For one hour, we place the “Ongoing Nakba” in the Occupied Palestinian Territories at the centre of our gathering.

Readings

Several people will read short texts on behalf of the participating organisations, and there will be live music.

Symbolic elements

We invite everyone to bring an extra pair of small shoes or shoes symbolising each child killed. We will place them in the circle, and you should take them back with you afterwards. You may also lay down keys, olive branches, or flowers.
