Requiem for Humanity
‘Man is governed by custom, prejudice, self-interest and fanaticism’
Montaigne, The Essays, 1595

This work came into being against a backdrop of war crimes, crimes against humanity and the
‘proven risk’ of genocide in Palestine.
It reflects the international community’s persistent failure to ensure compliance with the law,
despite the fact that this has been clearly affirmed by the International Court of Justice.
The violence they endure, in the form of illegal occupations or devastating attacks, is interwoven
here with the distress, determination and resistance of the Palestinian people.
The artist invites us to contemplate the arbitrary and political dimension of human life.
This work becomes a space for meditation, a silent dialogue between those who dominate and
those who suffer, an invitation to view our own humanity in a different light.
It questions shared memory: How do we learn collectively from the past? Why are knowledge,
commemorations and international law not enough to prevent the repetition of inhuman acts?

A work in the service of humanity

The original panels of this fresco are clay bas-reliefs that form part of a current exhibition curated
by Catherine Guyot: “The Body and the Sacred”.
The exhibition presented here is a variation on the original fresco in the form of photographic
prints on aluminium Dibond panels.
This work, dedicated to the service of humanity, is offered free of charge, with no commercial
gain for the artist. Her proposal is open to all interested venues, including cultural, religious and
institutional sites, foundations, public spaces, brownfield sites, galleries, and both indoor and
outdoor locations…

Catherine Guyot describes herself as a sculptor of humanity

A French artist, born in Marseille and based in Saint-Izaire – France. Whilst her work highlights
the beauty of the human body, she pays particular attention to emotions and experiences. Her
forms reconnect with figuration or break free from it to capture, retain and allow the soul and
consciousness to emerge.
Sculpture, and even more so clay, is for her a vital means of giving form to the invisible and
questioning our place in the world.

The question of the universality of the human being lies at the heart of her work

“Universality means that human beings are endowed with equal human rights simply by virtue of
being human, wherever they live and whoever they are, regardless of their status or any particular
characteristic”.

Art as a tool for connection

In a world she perceives as “fragmented”, her art serves to bring people together.
By shaping clay, she seeks to build bridges, to raise awareness and to embody the richness of
human diversity beyond cultural and linguistic barriers.
Catherine Guyot invites visitors to an experience that is both aesthetic and meditative, in which this
dialogue with the body becomes a path of reflection and contemplation.
An invitation to look at who we are in a different light – in our bodies, in our minds and in our
human
