Launch of the Caravane Project

On Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., we invite you to House of Compassion for a morning launching the Caravane project, with Anna Lodeserto and Sidi Katumwa, who will share two powerful and complementary experiences.
The Journey of Marco Cavallo: a caravan against confinement (Italy, 2025)
With Anna Lodeserto, we will explore the journey undertaken in September–October 2025 around the Italian symbol Marco Cavallo, the “blue horse” created in the 1970s in the psychiatric hospital of Trieste. This horse, built by patients and artists under the impulse of psychiatrist Franco Basaglia, became an emblem of the struggle against confinement and for human dignity. In 2025, Marco Cavallo set out again, travelling through symbolic sites of confinement in Italy: the CPRs (Repatriation Centres), the ports of Brindisi and Bari, and border areas linked to the externalisation of migration policies toward Albania.
This experience will help us imagine a Belgian caravan connecting mental health, human rights, and resistance to exclusion.
The Caravan of Undocumented People: a participatory process in Wallonia
Sidi Katumwa will share his experience of a caravan organised a few years ago in Wallonia, inspired by the movement of undocumented people. This caravan, documented by CIRE, aimed to:
- make visible the realities faced by people without legal status,
- meet residents and local officials,
- reclaim public space through walking, speaking, and being present,
- shift public opinion through direct, human, non‑mediated encounters,
- empower those concerned through a participatory process.
Why this morning?
Because we want to imagine, together, a Caravan. This caravan would take place during the Mental Health Week in October 2026.
